Spera means hope in Latin, and it is a members’ shared vision on music. All members studied a sacred choral music under Koji Oguchi, choir director, when they were high school students. They were deeply touched by Oguchi’s music and established the Ensemble Choir SPERA. Making its debut in concert in March 2014 at Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall, SPERA’s music was highly prized and well-reviewed in newspapers. It serves in Masses and services and performs in concerts as an ecumenical choir, composed of students from Kitasato University, International Christian University, Hitotsubashi University and Rikkyo University. Our repertoire embraces operatic and lighter music alongside classical choral works, with orchestra, from Bach to Bernstein, and a wide range of a cappella repertoire, which we have also toured abroad. Our second CD was released in November 2009. A friendly choir of 60-70 Singers, we give four main local concerts a year and enjoy touring. Since 2002, our concert tours have included Lake Garda, Venice, Umbria, Tuscany, Kraków, Amiens and Ghent. In the UK we have performed at the London Coliseum (2006), Ely Cathedral (2007), the Southbank Centre (2010) and Winchester Cathedral (2011).  less
