Having been friends and in the choral Scene for twenty years, the two have been talking about a project like this for around fifteen years. Spurred by the release of the revised English missal, Alejandro and Eugene both thought it a good time to finally restart the project that they had shelved for some time. Only now, the idea wasn’t just to end with a single album; the idea was now to establish a ministry that would introduce a new generation of music to Philippine Catholics. The new ministry would have as its aim the creation of beautiful music to help the faithful to a more prayerful, solemn state of mind. The group is made up of twenty-somethings (mostly!) who are young professionals living in London. Founded by singers and beatboxers from the likes of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, Last Choir Standing and Britain's Got Talent favourites Out of the Blue, the group’s repertoire spans from Billy Joel to the Black Eyed Peas, via pop, jazz, barbershop, rap and original composition as they offer a programme of sumptuous jazz arrangements, genre jumping covers and assorted originals. Following a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe, The Refrains enjoyed a sold-out London debut at The Forge, Camden. Recent gigs have included The London A Cappella Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival, Silver Bullet and private events.
