A "circle dance", this performance from December, 2010 is The vocal Art ensemble's interpretation of what it might have looked like when it was performed by the pilgrims who had come to visit the black virgin statue at the monestary.

Our aim was to capture a serious English Boys Choir poise while making the most of the poems playful spookiness, so we elicited help from the men of the chorus to try and 'frighten' the women singing.

The women of The vocal Art ensemble perform Ro Agura's "Hotaru Koi" (Ho, Firefly) as part of their May 2011 concert "Cloudburst--Sounds of Nature". To set the mood, the men behind the women are providing 'firefly' effects using laser keychains.

As this piece was meant to represent the early beginnings of human civilization and the birth of language, we have staged the piece in a somewhat tribal way and added jungle sound effects.

The women shed their shawls and toss them into the center to represent the ingredients being dropped into the bubbling 'cauldron'.
