Originally dedicated to performing 17th and 18th century operas, the membership voted to rename the group Richmond Opera in 2016 to reflect a diversification into performing operas of other eras. Our next opera will be a fully staged performance of JF Lampe's burlesque 'The Dragon of Wantley', a hilarious pastiche of Handel's operas, sung in English with baroque orchestra, at the lovely Victorian Normansfield Theatre. It was such a riot back in the day that it eclipsed Handel's more serious works! The programme of inspirational compositions by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Schumann is a perfect prelude to spring and encompasses the Romantic themes of dream, destiny, heroism, and pantheisM. Brahms’ Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) contrasts heavenly bliss with the sorrows of the human condition, while Schumann’s Nachtlied evokes the serene world of sleep. Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture portrays the fall of a once all-conquering hero and Mendelssohn’s Die Erste Walpurgisnacht is a dramatic musical rendition of the clash between nature-worshipping Druidic tradition and new belief in a God disembodied from the natural world. The chamber choir comprises of some 40 adult mixed voices. SPS are based at the heart of a vibrant City of Leeds where it is one component of the larger Choral Foundation of Leeds Minster. Rehearsals take place on Sunday evenings and singers are most welcome to come along. The Singer's perform concerts at the Minster as well as the wider Leeds area and further afield in Yorkshire, UK and internationally. St Peter's Singers have under taken recent overseas tours to Romania, Mallorca and Brittany France.  less

We aim to establish a strong group of singers who rehearse and perform regularly, predominantly a cappella choral works but sometimes with instruments and including some solo/small ensemble repertoire. We will be commissioning new works as well as exploring established repertoire and pieces by CoMA composers and associates. The group will reinforce as well as supplement the established CoMA Voices programme. Singers are expected to be confident singers with some sight reading experience, be prepared to tackle unusual vocal techniques and unconventional pieces.
