A community-friendly choir where no previous music experience is needed to be a part of. All you need to do is come with a smile and a passion for singing. No auditions are required and your first two weeks are on us.

All choir members receive a first-rate musical education. there has been a long tradition of musical excellence at St Laurence’s. the original church, built in the 1880s, had a strong choir of men and boys who took part in the Festival of Britain services in 1951. When the new church was opened in 1968, the musical tradition continued. A new Walker organ was installed in the church, using some pipework from the old organ and Directors of Music have included David Sanger, Professor Roger Wibberley, Paul Dewhurst, tom Fowkes, Marcus Wibberley, Iain Simcock and Andrew Ibbotson. the current Director of Music is Huw Morgan. Girls were first admitted to the choir some ten years ago, but the choir remains unique in this part of South-east London in that it continues to use only trebles (girls and boys) on the top line. the lower parts are provided by volunteer adults from the local community. We sing music from the early 1900's through to more modern songs such as Billy Joel, the Rat Pack etc. the chorus focuses on improving singing techniques and making chords "ring" while at the same time simply having fun. We love it when a 4 part chord is correctly tuned and the chord just locks together and harmonics (or overtones) ring out loud and strong. We compete every year in local contest as a mean of measuring our progress against similar groups but we just love to perform for the public and so our contest activities are very well balanced with public performance. We think everyone can sing and complete beginners, shower singers and pros are all welcome. With no auditions and no requirements to read music it’s all about the enjoyment of singing. We sing for 3 terms a year and each term ends with a fantastic end of term charity gig, it’s great to be able to give back to the local community whilst enjoying ourselves so much! We sing everything from Queen and Aretha Franklin to Hozier and Florence and the Machine, and have members ranging in age from 20-70, there is really something for everyone!
