They wanted to show how two seemingly different cultures can fuse together to produce something great. This vision has grown into Chai-Town A Cappella.
Last year we performed at the a cappella competition Anahat, in Berkeley, CA, as a guest act at the dance competition Naach Nation, in New York, NY, and across the Midwest. As 2012 approaches, our group will be reaching its 10th anniversary and putting out our THIRD studio album!
Chai-Town is a completely student-run, non-profit group of 16 members, each of whom has a passion for Music. We love sharing this passion with our friends and family, our community, and the world. less

From the composer, Gordon Hamilton: during my piano studies, one of my favourite pieces was Michael Tippett's Second Piano Sonata, which uses his disjunct mosaic form: instead of Music flowing, through a logical sequence of harmony, melody and tempo, he (and other composers, including Stravinsky, Messiaen and my own teacher Butterley) created tiny fragments of Music -- totally contrasting in character -- which cascade into each other: an aural mosaic.
Tra$h Ma$h is a piece made up entirely of Musical quotes lifted directly from modern pop songs and mashed together using the Tippet technique (perfect for our 21st century attention spans!)
Deep down, I love trashy pop, and the singers in The Australian Voices are mostly under 21. We had a whole lot of parties to find the best (and worst) songs of 2011 to mash together in a kind of 60's disjunct treatment of pop, chopping it up and sticking it back together in a way that was never intended. I think it can be ridiculous an... less

We are students. We are friends. We all study at Stellenbosch University and believe in the power of Music to uplift, entertain and educate. We aim to share our voices and talent with all who will listen!
Any person acquainted with student culture understands the important role of Music and singing in the life of a young person. Acastella is a platform for young adults studying at Stellenbosch University to practice their love of singing.
Unfortunately the members got spread across the vast world and thus decided to stop Acastella at the end of 2013. less
