The score is at once rhythmic and exciting, haunting and unsettling. It was a winner of the 2018 Uncommon Music Festival Composition Competition. It is accessible for all fine high school, collegiate and community choral ensembles. Thompson. The 40-80 member A Cappella Choir offers freshman and sophomore Singers the opportunity to perform works for larger choirs and to fine-tune the art of choral singing through exposure to music from the Renaissance through the 21st century. In daily rehearsals, choir members hone musicianship skills such as rhythm, sight-reading and the understanding of complex scores. They develop an understanding of the intricacies of vocal production, including pitch and how to blend individual voices together into a unified, beautiful sound. Finally, members learn how to sing in an ensemble and to successfully meld as a team. The choir frequently performs with other School of Music ensembles, including the Utah Philharmonia orchestra, the Wind Ensemble, the Chamber Choir and Women’s Chorus. MY RED BOOTS is based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018). Both she and my late father, Josef Hoffman, were Jewish Holocaust Survivors. My mother’s brief memoirs are housed at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. I have been trying to hear music for MY RED BOOTS for decades. It is fitting that my muse cooperated with me when I was seeking a text to set to music for the Rocky Mountain Chamber Choir’s 2024 call for scores, because global anti-Semitism has not been this rampant since the 1930s. During the events of October 7, 2023 in Israel, "Babies were taken from their mother's arms" just as in my mother's poem.
