As a result of the love they had for choir music, they felt a need for a School choir to ...  moreUviwe Senior Secondary School Choir, shortly know as Uviwe SSS Choir was founded in 1997 by a group of students, most of whom used to sing in various church choirs. As a result of the love they had for choir music, they felt a need for a School choir to be established. From the first year of its existence, choir was trained and prepared for the Schools’ eisteddfods by two fellow students. In 1998, they both matriculated. In the following year these students continued with the choir training and were compensated for their services by the School Governing Body (SGB). In 2001 they were snatched by nearby Schools that were willing to pay them better wages and the SGB had to look for other people who could assist with choir training from the community. This continued until 2004, when the School employed a teacher who studied music at university. In 2009 another teacher, who studied music too, came and volunteered his services at the School. The School's choir became very successful in the mid-1980s, winning many competitions including the Llangollen Eisteddfod. When School was over, it seemed natural to carry on singing together as a choir, and the group's achievements included reaching the semi-finals of Sainsbury's Choir of the Year and appearing on Opportunity Knocks. In the 1990's, the choir moved to Harrow and officially became known as Jubilate. Sarah Stroh took over as Musical Director in 1999 and since then the choir has grown significantly, doubling in size to its current membership of 43. There are still some original members of the choir, who have been singing together for more than 25 years. Our recent competition successes include winning the Barnardo's National Choir competition in March 2013 and the ladies choir, folk and popular music classes and runner-up with distinction in the sacred music class in the 2012 Mid-Somerset Festival.
