The Concert Choir gives a number of performances in SouThern California every year, and has also toured in Canada, Hawaii, Europe, and The United States. The Concert Choir performs a variety of accompanied and unaccompanied repertoire, and collaborates annually with The CSUF University Singers to present performances of choral-orchestral masterworks. They have joined The University Singers in performances with The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and The Pacific Symphony Orchestra. For The past four years They have represented CSUF at The Pacific Southwest Intercollegiate Choral Association Festival of Choirs. I was on The 1 train on Manhattan’s West Side one day when I saw The poem “Heaven,” by Patrick Phillips. I was immediately captured by The simple beauty of Patrick’s poem, and The mystery of The first line, “It will be The past.” I loved his vision and thought immediately that I wanted to compose music for this poem. Mystery, joy, wonder. “Heaven” is The winner of choral composition competitions sponsored by both The Manhattan Choral Ensemble and Georgia College. The first movement depicts The remarkable story of The captured Africans who were reduced to slaves by European settlers in The American continent, particularly in The Caribbean. The second movement recounts The indepence of Haiti; and The third movement is about The Perseverance of The country which to this day, Haiti is fighting with fury to keep its freedom. “No human being must live on Their knees; slavery in all its forms is an affront to The Divine Creator. The sense of wonder teaches us to discover all The beauty and The magnificence of The creation, and The extraordinary richness of our humanity.
