We give you the pleasure of enjoying fine Music and knowing you are a part of a Musical community - a team that enriches the life of all of us. We currently have about 50 members. We feature a variety of Music from popular to classical. Our selections are fun and challenging for singers and entertaining and rewarding for audiences. Open rehearsals for potential new members are held in September and January at the beginning of the rehearsal seasons. No formal auditions are held, but we do expect new members to be experienced in four part choral singing, and to have some ability to read along with sheet Music. Also, a virtuoso performer, who was appointed as organist of Westminster Abbey at the young age of 20, Purcell enjoyed rock-star status during his lifetime, and was dubbed the “Orpheus Britannicus”. The first half of the performance features highlights of Purcell’s wonderful church Music, including perhaps his finest anthem, My heart is inditing, composed for the coronation of King James II. Then the Choir is joined by superb soloists to revel in his ground-breaking short opera Dido and Aeneas, describing the tragic love story of the Queen of Carthage and the founder of Rome, with its hauntingly lovely final aria, Dido’s Lament. Founded in New York City in 2008 by Artistic Director Vince Peterson, the organization now encompasses: a roster of professional ensemble singers, a volunteer chorus of 40-50 adults and an annual week-long Summer Institute in Brooklyn for composers and conductors. The culture of the organization marries informality, loving support and joyful curiosity, with the expectation of solid and technical Musicianship, constant learning and openness toward the unexpected.  less
