Renee Mitchell, spoken word Emmanuel Henreid, spoken word the COMPOSER WRITES: there comes a time in every child’s life when they will have “the talk” with a trusted adult. That talk is usually centered around topics relating to sexual maturation – the birds and the bees. However, in the life of a black child, there’s an additional talk that needs to happen: what to do if they are pulled over or have an encounter with the police. It boils down to four basic principles with the fourth being the ultimate goal: 1. Pull over. Don’t run. Keep calm; 2. Keep your hands where they can see them; 3. Be polite. Save your rage; 4. "How heavy lies the heart" has drawn inspiration from the traditional French Christmas carol, "Quelle est cette odeur agréable", which John Gay also set as a boisterous drinking song in the Beggar's Opera, "Fill every glass, for wine inspires us!" In addition, the song draws inspiration from Josquin's Missa Pange Lingua. In early 2018, I applied to be a participant at one of the Vancouver Chamber Choir's Interplay workshops funded by the SOCAN Foundation and to my delight I was accepted. "How heavy lies the heart" was one of the pieces that this amazing choir sight read for me on the spot. This choir is partnered with a non-profit organization called the New York Community Alliance for Sickle Cell Anemia Inc. We plan to use our concert venues for aiding this organization's cause. Our conductor John Hunter II is a young but competent conductor. He received his Master's in Choral Conducting from Mansfield University.
