NB: choirs interested in obtaining copies of the score can contact the Leading Note at info@leadingnote.com. I would like to acknowledge the a capella choir that I sing in, the Stairwell Carollers, and our director Pierre Massie, for their musical inspiration these past 25 years. I would also like to thank my friends in our "Ad hoc Chorale" for testing out this piece in one of our informal workshops and offering valuable comments. And with deepest appreciation to my brother Adam Rain and my friend Geneviève Lajoie for their invaluable support throughout my composing journey.  less

We accomplish our mission by combining the power of women's experience with musical expression in the following ways: 1) each season we commission one new piece for women's voices from a female composer; 2) each season, we research, uncover and perform a work for women's voices by a female composer who has been overlooked in music history; 3) we provide an annual scholarship to one girl to sing with the Phoenix Girl's Chorus and 4) each season, we perform two annual concerts and a variety of local performances in our communities and schools.  less

Recorded live on Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Christ Lutheran Church in Oakland Park, Florida. Performed by the Concert Choir ensemble of the Girl Choir of South Florida. Artistic Director: Wallis Peterson, Accompanist: Gayle Giese. Note from the composer: "Still I Rise" was inspired by the poem of the same name by poet laureate Maya Angelou. It is a women's anthem, saluting the strength to persevere through life's difficulties–low self-esteem, physical and emotional abuse, prejudice, abandonment, and the like. In summary, though a woman's life or past may be filled with tears and heartaches, with each day that she finds herself still living, she finds that she has grown stronger and risen a little higher because her circumstances have not overcome her. Thus, every new day can be one of hope and joy because regardless of the past, today, "still I rise"! Though I have been wounded, aching heart full of pain. Still I rise, yes, still I rise. Jus' like a budding rose, my...    less

Recorded live on May 15, 2015, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Performed by the Primes Choir ensemble of the Girl Choir of South Florida. Artistic Director: Jorge Valls, Accompanist: Gayle Giese. This popular children's folk song from Ghana is sung traditionally as a call and response. It is an Akan playground song. "Pete" (which means "vulture") is a nickname for children. It is a reference to a child's great appetite. Vulture, vulture, your mother is calling you. What does she want me to do? She said the meal is ready.   less

Since its inception, the Vail Chorale has been entertaining local audiences with Fall and Spring concerts that feature musical styles for every taste. Performances have taken place at various locations including Empire and Cienega High Schools, the Arizona Senior Academy, and the Del Webb Lodge at Rancho del Lago. Chorale members have included high school students as well as adults of all ages, who have found that the intergenerational experience has added to the fun of singing together. Concert attendees have remarked at the obvious enjoyment and enthusiasm that comes across to the audience. the Vail Chorale is directed by Fred Reinagel, the Chorale’s founder. Fred determines the theme and selects the repertoire for each concert cycle. Assistant Director Mel...    less
