David Rain: "Da pacem Domine" (sung by Matthew Curtis)

I felt the inspiration to start this piece in the weeks leading up to the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, in which my dear grandfather Jimmy Rain (1895-1974) had served in the Canadian forces, in one of the most dangerous roles, as a runner in northwestern France. This song honours his memory and the love that he showed me as a boy and a young man growing up.
Shortly after starting this piece, I then learned that my dear cousin Jamie Shaw (1959-2019) was gravely ill and with his permission, I have dedicated this piece to him as well. Jamie's courage, good spirit and humour throughout his illness was an inspiration to all of us who knew him.
"Da pacem Domine" is a musical search for peace: both external peace, between individuals, groups, societies, nations; and internal peace, to find a restful spot within the soul, amidst the serious tensions and conflicts seemingly inherent in the human stream of existence. It explor... less

music composed and performed by David W Solomons [aka the dwsChorale].
This particular setting was composed with a small mixed-ability choir
in mind, so the voices are mainly in two parts (men's and women's voices),
splitting to four parts (SATB) occasionally, where the words suggest it.
The musical style is reminiscent of the 19th century although the piano
part does go into 20th century style syncopation at times.

Colindale!
Out he walks, six feet tall, twenty two years, ripped jeans,
but respectable
(it's Saturday after all).
He's no threat he's going to cruise the shops.
Along she walks with her groceries old, frail,
her life hangs behind her like a snail-trail,
dirty but still quite natural.
Her eyes focus, she sees him:
the determined stride and the baseball cap,
the torn pants and his Walkman.
Fearful, frightened, full of disgust and mistrust,
she crosses the street, scowling
like a scornful cat that's just been thrown off a lap.
I felt ashamed, I felt annoyed
What about trust?
I just wouldn't react that way.
But then, as a youth approached me
I had a sudden and crucial thought.
I don't want to be smashed up
and I don't want to lose these things that I've just bought.
So I crossed the street and silently
became a product of this century.

I am proud of my musical colleagues for putting these videos together. I thank them for their loyalty to our fans and their fellow choir members, and for their diligence in preparing individual performances to such a demanding degree of musicianship.
We all share an understanding of how important it is right now to share the joy of song with the world.
Joined by my wife Holly and all the members of the Stairwell Carollers, we wish you peace and joy this Christmas season. We will perform live for you once again soon.

Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden,
und der Tag hat sich geneiget,
-Lukas 24:29 Stay with us, for it is toward evening
and the day is now far spent
Luke 24: 29
ABOUT THE WORK:
Abendlied
Composer Josef Rheinberger has crafted a beautiful setting of the text, with the six voice parts alternating roles between homophonic and contrapuntal writing.
ABOUT THE CHOIR:
Since 2009, the CWU Chamber choir has held annual recording sessions to create videos specifically designed for YouTube. All are under the baton of Dr. Gary A. Weidenaar, who has been the director of the choir since 2006.
As of Fall, 2016; there are 26 videos. Ten of those feature the music of Ola Gjeilo and are the result of working with Mr. Gjeilo in 3 recording sessions over a 5 year period. On most of them, he is at the Piano. His... less
