With a large repertoire ranging from art to popular music, and stretching from the medieval to the contemporary in style, this choir gives many concerts throughout the academic year, both in Ireland and abroad. Following a competitive selection process each September, eighteen gifted students are awarded a scholarship, with recipients of the award coming from a range of academic disciplines across the university, from Music to Medicine, Law, Agricultural Science, Commerce and Engineering. The choir regularly broadcasts on Irish television and radio. Since its formation in 1999, the group frequently performs with orchestras, including the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Earley Musicke Ensemble and the European Union Chamber Orchestra, and on the university campus with the UCD Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Choir. It specializes in choral and early music—notably Renaissance, Baroque, and rarely heard repertoire—and is dedicated to delivering emotionally resonant, historically informed performances. Winner of the Chorus America/ASCAP Alice Parker Award, Crescendo invites choral Singers to audition for its 22nd season.This season, our repertoire spans 16th-century motets, works by Johann Sebastian Bach, and contemporary music in the Piazzolla style, featuring the U.S. premiere of Martín Palmeri’s A Jewish Cantata (2022). Water Ruminations is a setting of six poems by the thirteenth-century poet Rumi, in English translations from the Persian by Coleman Barks, for double choir and organ. The poetry sings of literal and spiritual connections between water and sky, a drop of water and human life, flowing water and love, drinking water and its container, the giddiness of spring and rolling seas, and the ocean's gifts and singing. Primarily a for-hire performance ensemble, this group offers its members the chance to develop their skills at a professional level. Many alumni continue on to pursue careers in music performance. This is the flagship ensemble of Canada's National Arts Network, ArtsConnex.
