The Choir was founded in 1936 under The baton of William Morris. After him various conductors established The ensemble as an influential South African choir: Gawie Cillié (1940 - 1954) Philip McLachlan (1955 - 1976) Johan de Villiers (1977 - 1984) Acáma Fick (1985 - 1992) Sonja van der Walt (1993 - 2002) André van der Merwe (2003 - ) The Choir comprises of students from various academic courses and generally only a few members study music. The Choir, an ensemble of approximately 80 – 100 Voices, has won international acclaim through performances, Concert tours, and participation in prestigious festivals and competitions. The Choir is currently ranked 1st on The Interkultur World Ranking List for amateur choirs. Music from every music epoch will be performed from serious to more pop/contemporary a cappella forms. This ensemble is offered every fall and spring semester, and satisfies The fine arts requirement when enrolled for a minimum of three semesters.

A perennial competitor on The international stage, The Alliance Chorus has qualified for The Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) International Competition every year since its’ formation in 1999. Ever “In Tune With Excellence”, The Alliance competed this past Summer in Las Vegas finishing 15th in The world, and in previous years has finished as high as 4th place! In addition to The competition circuit, The Alliance Chorus also has had many opportunities to give back and perform for The community.
