The group rehearses August through November and January through April with concerts at the end of each session. The group is know for its variety in programming. Directed by Bruce Phelps, the goal of the Ensemble is to provide a quality experience for singers and audiences; explore new repertoire and sing music of the masters, and perform with utmost musical integrity through a collaborative and persistent effort by all participants.  less

We welcom...  moreThe J Singers combine singing ‘seriously for pleasure’ with performing charity fund-raising concerts throughout the county of Somerset. We sing a varied mix of music from traditional ballads and songs from the West End shows, to popular numbers. We welcome new adult members with or without prior choral experience. You do need some musical ability, but it's not essential to read music. Rehearsals are in Wembdon, near Bridgwater, on a Tuesday evening.

The group's first piece—William Byrd’s “This sweet and merry month of May”, whose ending celebrated Queen Elizabeth I with the words And greet Eliza with a rhyme: O beauteous Queen of Second Troy, Take well in worth a simple toy. provided a great name for the group. Eliza’s Toyes was born, and existed every summer in Madison, Wisconsin. In 2008, a fair number of singers who were in Eliza's Toyes are living in Madison once again. Thus we gather, outside of the Festival, for the joy of music making. It is our pleasure to continue sharing this wonderful body of music with you for the second year!  less

The group was founded in 2008 by three of Carrington’s former students who shared the desire to form an elite professional Vocal chamber Ensemble under his direction.
