Hoffman. www.stanleymhoffman.com All rights reserved. The poem above is sometimes called “I Am” due to its repetition of the phrase. Was the poem inspired? The Hebrew name for God, YHWH, means “I am” or “I am that I am.” And there does seem to be something magical about the poem, as it was written by a woman who, to our knowledge, had never written a poem before. Mary Elizabeth Frye was an orphan with no formal education. In 1932 she and her husband hosted a young Jewish woman, Margaret Schwarzkopf, who was fleeing the Holocaust. When she received news that her mother had died in Germany, the heartbroken houseguest told Frye in despair that she had never had the chance to “stand by my mother’s grave and shed a tear.” Frye found herself composing the poem above on a ripped-off section of a brown paper shopping bag. She said the words “just came to her.”  less

A performance by a live choir (a cappella and at the correct pitch) can be heard on the score page. The words are my own and tell of children playing in the dusty streets (ie of Bethlehem) unaware that a miracle has happened and asking them to look up to where the angels are singing.

The choir delights ...  moremen2sing are a vibrant group, singing Songs that cross many different styles of music. Using the simple view that a good Song is a good Song, has meant that they bring together a collection of pieces that appeal to a wide audience. The choir delights in introducing new Songs that are connected by their unique choral sound, rather than from a particular genre and it is this wide appeal and their sense of fun that has meant the group is in constant demand and continually attracts new members. Even in its early days the choir never quite conformed to the accepted norms of what should be included in their repertoire. However, this in no way hindered its appeal and it went on to win a number and prestigious competitions including one of the largest Eisteddfods for male choirs in Wales, an award for services to the arts from Chelmsford City Council and passed the advanced choral singing examination of The Associated Board of the Royal College of Music Successive musical directors contributed the choir`s ...    less

We took part of our rehearsal last night to honor Black History Month and celebrate the diversity of our Chorus. What better way to celebrate than with Song. We chose "Oh Happy Day"' a late '60s gospel Song with its roots from an 18th-century hymn.
