The quotation most aptly describes the repertoire on the Norwegian Chamber choir Schola Cantorum's recording of hymns to Mary, the Mother of God, in which tranquillity, eternity and 'bursting forth into sound' are encountered in many different guises. The composers represented here have often chosen to allow their music to evolve in stable structures and remain within static harmonic spaces even when the music becomes expressive and dramatic: Benjamin Britten, Francis Poulenc, Maurice Duruflé, Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, Martin Ødegaard, Kjell Mørk Karlsen, Anton Bruckner, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Arvo Pärt, Ola Gjeilo, Andrew Smith and Trond Kverno. https://shop.klicktrack.com/2l/420085/ Throughout its existence the Chamber choir Schola Cantorum has had high ambitions. The choir has built up an international reputation and has made it a trademark to include newly wri...    less

By yon bonny banks and by yon bonny braes, where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond, where me and my true love were ever wont to gae, on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. O you'll take the high road and I'll take the low road, and I'll be in Scotland afore ye, but me and my true love will never meet again; on the bonny banks of Loch Lomond. T'was there that we parted in yon shady glen, On the steep side of Loch Lomond, where deep in purple hue the Highland hills we view, and the moon coming out in the gloaming. The wee birdies sing and the wild flowrs spring, And in sunshine the waters are sleeping, But the broken heart it kens nae seco...    less

It started life as The James Ashworth Singers giving its first concert in Thornton Parish Church in April 1976. After some years the base moved to the Unitarian Church near St Luke’s Hospital to be more central for members coming from all parts of Bradford and the surrounding area. In 1979 James Ashworth moved on to projects new and was succeeded by Douglas Robinson who had recently retired as Chorus Master at Covent Garden and who held the post until ill health forced his retirement. During this period the name was changed first to The Ashworth Singers and later to The Bradford Chorale. John Coates took over as Musical Director in 1984 and was followed by Tricia Platts in 1991. Since Tricia’s departure the Chorale has been led by several Musical Directors including Carleton Etherington, Andrew Dibb, Elizabeth Altman, John Griffiths and Christopher Rathbone. Our new Musical Director, Paul Dewhurst took us into the second quarter century of musical life and ...    less
