A few years later, Kevin Fenton programmed that piece for his choir at FSU. He shared with me his strong connection with The piece at a time when his sister-in-law, Peggy Fenton was also fighting breast cancer. Sadly, Peggy Fenton lost her fight with cancer in 2009. That same year Kevin contacted me and asked if I would write a piece in her memory for her husband and her two daughters. He shared with me a video of a presentation she did at The MoTher’s Day banquet at her church, just a few days before her passing.
The title of her presentation was “From Hats to Crown”. She shared stories about her life and The many relationship roles one plays: as a daughter, a sister, as a wife, a moTher and a teacher. As she talked about each role she wore a different hat. She ended with a crown, shar... less

Glee- The Ghosts
In life three ghostly friars were we,
And now three friarly ghosts we be.
Around our shadowy table placed,
The spectral bowl before us floats:
With wine that none but ghosts can taste,
We wash our unsubstantial throats.
Three merry ghosts—three merry ghosts—
three merry ghosts are we:
Let The ocean be port, and we’ll think it good sport
To be laid in that red sea.
With songs that jovial spectres chaunt,
Our old refectory still we haunt.
The traveller hears our midnight mirth:
"O list!" he cries, "The haunted choir!"
The merriest ghost that walks The earth,
Is sure The ghost of a ghostly friar.
Three merry ghosts—three merry ghosts—
three merry ghosts are we:
Let The ocean be port, and we’ll think it good sport
To be laid in that red sea. less

The SONG of RUTH for Soprano Solo, SATB Chorus unaccompanied by Stanley M. Hoffman (2015)
The Song of Ruth, a setting of The most famous passage from The Book of Ruth (Ruth 1:16–17), opens with a gentle polyphonic section for The chorus. (“Do not ask me to leave you, or to stop following you; for where ever you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.”) The soprano joins The choir for The twice-repeated middle section of The piece. The music here is contrastingly homophonic and intense. (“Where you die, I will die and be buried.”) The tune and harmonies are borrowed from a passage in my piece Selections from “The Song of Songs” for male voice and band. That piece is dedicated to my wife, Ruth, hence The connection. If that were not enough, our daughter is named Naomi! The Song of Ruth closes with a recapitulation of The music from The opening, but with new words assigned to it, and with The soprano soloist providing a descant for it. (“May The Lord cause ill fate to befall me, and more, if anything but death separates me and you.”) Appropriat... less

Poetry by W.B. Yeats
When you are old and gray and full of sleep
And nodding by The fire, take down this Book,
And slowly read, and dream of The soft look
Your eyes had once, and of Their shadows deep;
How many Loved your moments of glad grace,
And Loved your beauty with Love false or true;
But one man Loved The pilgrim soul in you,
And Loved The sorrows of your changing face.
And bending down beside The glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon The mountains overhead,
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. less
