a Poem by William Ernest Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul. less

It is a tuneful and beautifully enchanting piece based on Christina Rossetti’s Poem, ’Remember’, and would be at home either in concerts or services. David has dedicated this fine piece to a fine Yorkshire lady, Hannah Hauxwell, who sadly passed away as he was penning the work.

(from Old Possum's book of practical cats)
The estate of T S Eliot would not let me use the Poem itself as a choral piece.
So this is the choral version of the Jellicle music as a drinking song for SATB choir,
with new words by Jill Mitchell called "Praise to the Vine"
