Launched in 2006, this choir for treble and changing voices continues to expand its horizons, develop its membership and satisy a variety of musical tastes. The choir has toured throughout British Columbia and Alberta. In July 2011, they sang in Ottawa at the Unisong festival for Canada Day, and in July 2013 the group was featured at the presitigious and exciting international Festival 500 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Wherever the choir travels, we spread the joy of music-making and hope to bring communities together through song.
Shumayela offers a focus on thorough and excellent music education, with singers learning about healthy vocal production, the body-voice connection, and vibrant performance presence as well as a strong emphasis on musical literacy, music theory, and sightsinging skills. As with all our ensembles, Shumayela provides a secure and accepting social environment where all singers feel their importance as members of the group... less

The choir currently has around 30 members, with Martin Weston as musical director.
The choir's repertoire is wide and varied, with many songs taken from shows and films. We also sing sacred, gospel, jazz, pop and world music, with the odd novelty number thrown in!
We perform at many events in Lancashire and Merseyside, including two main concerts each year at Rainford Parish Hall, plus charity events and private functions.

Father José Maurício (1767-1830), himself a mulatto, grandson of slaves, son of freed slaves, was one of the exponents in music of the Americas. Musically educated in the classical tradition, he began teaching at 12 and writing at age 16. He reached the rank of Master of the Royal Chapel (most important post for a musician in Brazil Cologne) appointed by King John IV and conducted the first performances of Mozart’s "Requiem" and Haydn’s "Creation" in Brazil. Poor, mulatto, losing his father early and being educated with great difficulty, it is not known exactly how managed to get the culture that claim to have belonged to him. Even with all this prestige, he did not escape the prejudice by the origin in a family of slaves. less

Yon Monn Nouvo (A World Anew)
Open your ears and listen,
Hear and listen, my friends.
Open your hearts and hear,
Hear and listen, my brothers:
Both you and I are full of dreams;
You help me and I help you.
That is how we will come to build a world anew.
“With many hands, the load is light."
“One finger alone cannot eat okra.”
Knowledge and wealth are goods of humanity
That we must share in true fellowship.
These are statements that bring happiness;
Words of wisdom that make life harvest.
We are, each one of us, seeds of eternity
That sprout and bloom in our humanity.
Let us all work together for a world anew,
A world more humane, a universe of love.
Open your ears and lis... less
