In mid-April, 2011, Ola spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus for a project in which he joined the choir in recording 3 of his compositions. On this video, Gjeilo adds an improvised accompaniment (in a one-take rendition) to his composition "Northern Lights"-- which is published as an unaccompanied piece. Because of his view that improvising is a wonderful snapshot of artists "at that moment", the project was entitled "In the Moment". The other composition to which he created an improvised accompaniment was "Ubi Caritas". He also accompanied the choir on "The Ground", which includes CWU's resident faculty quartet -- the Kairos String Quartet. Tra$h Ma$h is a piece made up entirely of musical quotes lifted directly from modern pop songs and mashed together using the Tippet technique (perfect for our 21st century attention spans!) Deep down, I love trashy pop, and the singers in The Australian Voices are mostly under 21. We had a whole lot of parties to find the best (and worst) songs of 2011 to mash together in a kind of 60's disjunct treatment of pop, chopping it up and sticking it back together in a way that was never intended.
