This smallest and most select of the Hofstra Choirs comprises the best singers at the University, both within and outside the Department of Music, and focuses on the distinct art of unaccompanied, or a cappella, ensemble singing, presented in carefully chosen performance spaces that are uniquely attuned to celebrate the human voice's potential. From an educational standpoint, the ensemble serves two main functions for the University. First, it acts as a laboratory for Hofstra’s future Music educators, both undergraduate and graduate, providing outlets for the exploration of the art of ensemble preparation through the study of the highest-quality choral literature. At present, there are approximately 30 singers in the Choir for whom Music is a passionate interest – for many it is also a future profession. Many of the singers, either study or work at the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences or the University of Jyväskylä. the repertoire of Cantinovum is colorful and varied. It spans from folk Music to sacred Music and from Renaissance to modern composers. In October 2012, the Choir was awarded the prestigious title of Choir of the Year 2012, after an extensive UK-wide search and a competitive Grand Final held at London's Royal Festival Hall. the ensemble was established in 2007 by present Musical director andrew Nunn and performs regularly across Scotland and beyond, having given concerts in renowned venues such as Glasgow Cathedral, the SECC, Dunkeld Cathedral, Paisley Abbey, the Mackintosh Church, the Queen's Hall, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and London’s Cadogan Hall. the Choir has also performed in more obscure locations, having “sung on the subway” as part of the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) promotion of the Glasgow underground.
