there still was no place in Zolani for the youth to express themselves in cultural activities that was not offered at school nor in the community. After school the youth would loiter around without direction. This lead to the formation of the Zolani Youth Choir. the basic idea and purpose of the Choir is to equip youth of our community with basic Music skills.
the Choir consists of 25 scholars from different schools who are between the ages of 12 and 26 years. these scholars have no professional training or background in formal Music, but have proven to have a passion and love for the art. the Choir was created after 200 singers, representing most of the church Choirs of the day in Victoria, assembled in 1934 to sing Messiah. they agreed to continue singing together to promote choral Music, and the Victoria Choral Society, at that time called the Victoria Choral Union, was formed. the instrumentalists who played with the Choir later formed the Victoria Symphony.
Recent performances with the Victoria Symphony include Wagner's Lohengrin (Third Act), Verdi's Requiem, Orff's Carmina Burana, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Britten's War Requiem, and Handel’s Messiah. Each year, the Victoria Choral Society also produces its own concerts wi... less
