The Choir was founded in 1936 under The baton of William Morris. After him various conductors established The ensemble as an influential South African choir: Gawie Cillié (1940 - 1954) Philip McLachlan (1955 - 1976) Johan de Villiers (1977 - 1984) Acáma Fick (1985 - 1992) Sonja van der Walt (1993 - 2002) André van der Merwe (2003 - ) The Choir comprises of students from various academic courses and generally only a few members study music. The Choir, an ensemble of approximately 80 – 100 voices, has won international acclaim through performances, concert tours, and participation in prestigious festivals and competitions. The Choir is currently ranked 1st on The Interkultur World Ranking List for amateur choirs. The choir sings evensong every Sunday during term and performs in concerts organised by Somerville Music Society. Somerville Choir is currently being conducted by David Crown. He is assisted by The two organ scholars, Douglas Knight and Robert Pecksmith (http://www.robert-smith.org.uk ), and choir manager Stefan Schwarz. Since David Crown took over as Director of Chapel Music in 2007, The choir has been involved in two opera productions (Purcell's 'dido and Aeneas ' and Gluck's 'Orfeo ed Euridice') as well as concerts in Oxford, Brighton, Wells, Swindon, Upton upon Severn and Steeple Aston. The choir continues The tradition of The Akademski pevski zbor v Ljubljani (Academic Choir of The University of Ljubljana) founded in 1926 by France Marolt, which consisted of male singers only. In The years between 1938 and 1940 Marolt also conducted The Female Academic choir. After The cultural silence held during The Second World War, The choir recommenced its activity, this time as a mixed choir under a new name, Akademski pevski zbor Tone Tomšič.
