Philomela is a wonderful experience that will linger in your mind even after the Music has died down. Philomela has become one of the most highly regarded Choirs in Finland. Marjukka Riihimäki has acted as the Choir´s conductor since it was established in 1984. Philomela is one of the most original Choirs in Finland. It is a group of 40 unprejudiced, Music-loving women who together form a graceful, polyphonic Musical instrument. The Choir performances are intensive and surprising experiences which combine theatrical elements to Music. Philomela’s rehearsals are held in Helsinki but the Choir gives several concerts per year all over Finland as well as abroad. Musical profile of Philomela is composed of contemporary Scandinavian Choir Music with flavours of world Music, especially Finnish folk Music.  less

Words & Music: Anthony Sylvestre. Performance time: 4’45. The song can be performed in 2 languages versions: in English/French or in English/English. The main theme is a declaration of love. It can be sung to either a woman or a man. While the qualities of the beloved are listed in contemplative praise, the promise to be there in difficult times is made with tenderness and sincerity. As we are enveloped in this loving tranquility, the voices of the Choir intensify until they reach a second theme, one that is more marked and determined. This sequence entitled ”The French Dream’, introduces us to a more mysterious and dreamlike atmosphere, straight out of our childhood fairy tales. Then, as if we had fallen asleep for a moment, the words 'Beautiful! Beautiful' resound once again, bringing us back to a reassuring reality.  less

We give you the pleasure of enjoying fine Music and knowing you are a part of a Musical community - a team that enriches the life of all of us. We currently have about 50 members. We feature a variety of Music from popular to classical. Our selections are fun and challenging for singers and entertaining and rewarding for audiences. Open rehearsals for potential new members are held in September and January at the beginning of the rehearsal seasons. No formal auditions are held, but we do expect new members to be experienced in four part choral singing, and to have some ability to read along with sheet Music.
