It started life as The James Ashworth Singers giving its first concert in Thornton Parish Church in April 1976. After some years the base moved to the Unitarian Church near St Luke’s Hospital to be more central for members coming from all parts of Bradford and the surrounding area. In 1979 James Ashworth moved on to projects new and was succeeded by Douglas Robinson who had recently retired as Chorus Master at Covent Garden and who held the post until ill health forced his retirement. During this period the name was changed first to The Ashworth Singers and later to The Bradford Chorale. John Coates took over as Musical Director in 1984 and was followed by Tricia Platts in 1991. Since Tricia’s departure the Chorale has been led by several Musical Directors including Carleton Etherington, Andrew Dibb, Elizabeth Altman, John Griffiths and Christopher Rathbone. In order to shape a youth citizenry that is responsible and of impeccable integrity for effective leadership in the society, the choir advocates for the attainment of quality education for its members. Though founded and based in Whitby, our membership is made up of residents from all over Durham Region and the GTA. We truly represent and reflect the diversity of the Region in which we perform. The choir currently numbers 70 to 80 choir members ranging in age from 18 to 80.

We preform choral music, ethnic music and modern songs emphasis on Slovenian authors. We preform a lot across Slovenia on solo tours or we prefrom on different cultural events. For four years in a row, we organize Festival oktetov Kranj (Festival of small vocal groups). We also preformed successfully abroad in Perast, Montenegro and Praga.

The choir currently has around 30 members, with Martin Weston as musical director. The choir's repertoire is wide and varied, with many songs taken from shows and films. We also sing sacred, gospel, jazz, pop and world music, with the odd novelty number thrown in! We perform at many events in Lancashire and Merseyside, including two main concerts each year at Rainford Parish Hall, plus charity events and private functions.  less
