St Stephen’s has a strong Musical tradition with ...  moreIn the ancient village of Hackington, now a suburb approximately a mile north-east of the centre of Canterbury, St Stephen’s Church is home to one of the leading church Choirs in the Canterbury Diocese. St Stephen’s has a strong Musical tradition with two choral services each Sunday throughout the year (except August when the Choir has a well deserved break – but usually sing elsewhere for a number of days). Music is sung from across the centuries, ranging from plainsong dating back hundreds of years right through to contemporary works by composers such as John Tavener and Arvo Pärt, including works written especially for us.  less

We sing a-cappella style Music in four-part harmony, called Barbershop. The songs we sing are varied, some old classics, some modern with a twist! In an effort to stay committed to singing and performing at the highest possible level, we compete each year in a national contest and we also perform our own annual Show to raise our profile in the community. Artistic Director: Wallis Peterson. The joik is a unique form of cultural expression for the Sami people in northern Scandinavia. Each joik is meant to reflect a person or place. This does not mean that it is a song about the person or place, but that the joiker is attempting to transfer "the essence" of that person or place into song—one joiks their friend, not about their friend. This joik is the essence of a young boy's dream of riding through the snow on the back of a reindeer.  less
