Mary Kay Geston, conductor. Lalla, a 14th century Sufi-mystic poet from the Kashmir region of India, believed strongly in the development of the self while reaching enlightenment. The metaphor of dancing while feeling free or naked exemplifies the beauty of empowerment and self-worth. This work uses influences of Classical Indian music and other vocal effects to allow Lalla’s message to come to life.

While the majority of the singers are undergraduate music majors, membership is open to all students at the University through an audition process. The group has achieved an impressive reputation of excellence, having been chosen each of the last twenty years to perform at conventions or festivals around the country: the Pennsylvania Music Educators State Conference; the Eastern Division Music Educators National Conference; the Music Educators National Convention; the American Choral Directors Association Pennsylvania State Conference, and the ACDA Eastern Division Convention. The Choir is renowned on the international stage as well, representing the US at competitions and festivals around the world. A few years later, Kevin F...  moreWhen I was a junior in college, my mother was fighting breast cancer and my way of coping with it was to write a choral piece for her. I wrote “Pour Toi, Mère” (For You, Mother) which premiered at my senior composition recital. A few years later, Kevin Fenton programmed that piece for his Choir at FSU. He shared with me his strong connection with the piece at a time when his sister-in-law, Peggy Fenton was also fighting breast cancer. Sadly, Peggy Fenton lost her fight with cancer in 2009. That same year Kevin contacted me and asked if I would write a piece in her memory for her husband and her two daughters. He shared with me a video of a presentation she did at the Mother’s Day banquet at her church, just a few days before her passing. The title of her presentation was “From Hats to Crown”. She shared stories about her life and the many relationship roles one plays: as a daughter, a sister, as a wife, a mother and a teacher. As she talked about each role she wore a different hat. It is composed of members coming from the Senior High School and College levels of the University, and in the recent years, it has bagged awards in different inter-school competitions, including the Southern Luzon Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SLCUAA) Cultural Competition wherein it ranked as the 1st Runner-Up in 2017 and 2018, and the 2nd Runner-Up in 2019. It has also sent its members to acclaimed skill improvement programs such as those organized by the Children’s Museum and Library, Inc. wherein its members were hailed as the best in singing workshops in 2016, 2017, and 2018.  less
