Today it comprises 23 selected singers, Cantilena meaning "lightweight song", deriving from the Latin word for "song" or "melody". Whenever possible, during concerts the members of the choir wear a pearl necklace to represent the significance of the activities pursued: each member of the choir is represented by one of the pearls, with the strand linking them all being the music - the main purpose of so much hard work to achieve artistic quality. As well as being an extremely feminine accessory, it also illustrates the quality, refinement, finish and musical beauty that the Academia Concerto pursues. This work reflects some of the history of Manchester as seen through the eyes of local poet Audrey Vaughan, including its origins around the river Irwell, the original monastery which became Manchester Cathedral, the industrial revolution, the Peterloo Massacre, and the singing of church and cathedral choirs up to the present day.
