Described as ‘a fine body of singers’ by John Packwood in the Bristol Evening Post, they have delighted audiences with their fresh, inspiring interpretations of choral repertory from many centuries. Members of the choir come from many parts of the UK for intensive weekends of music-making, culminating in concerts acclaimed for their invigorating choral sound, clarity of tone and texture, and innovative programming. In June 2010 Harmonia Sacra were invited to perform a programme of music by early seventeenth-century English Recusant musicians (including William Byrd, Richard Dering and Peter Philips) for a Swansea University History conference at Oystermouth. Members saw the need for a name which reflected their distinctive sound and musical objectives. They chose Voyces – a uniting image, powerful in its Simplicity, a word with a bit of a twist, reflecting the eclectic and often unusual repertoire of the choir. In using the archaic spelling – ‘Voyces’ – the choir acknowledges thousands of years of rich choral tradition whilst establishing itself in the 21st century choral landscape. The choir is fast making a name for itself premiering works never before heard in Perth or in fact the world. Voyces seeks to be an interactive and involved performing group in the local WA and wider Australian musical community. It was one of his most popular madrigals, as well as one of the most internationally famous songs of the period. It is apparently based on John Dowland’s “Flow, my Teares”. Like Dowland’s lyrics, these lyrics express an intense melancholy of someone whose happiness has been abruptly shattered and desires to not be saved from this dark despair. The speaker wishes his death by drowning in his despair, in his tears. The expression of melancholy, and notions of darkness, neglect, Time’s cruelty, spiteful age, were themes used by Elizabethan songwriters to prefigure the stark inevitability of death, and it remained a prominent feature of English literature and music in the time of Elizabeth I and Shakespeare. With about 150 singers, an organization team of 12 permanent members, a professional engineering and logistics crew, a band consisting of professional musicians and a passionate director Gospelnight Dresden fulfills all requirements to offer visitors of worship a memorable evening in meeting with the joy of the Gospel. Following on from the formation of a Birralee Tenth Anniversary Alumni choir in 2005, Resonance of Birralee was formed under the leadership of Paul Holley. The young people involved represent a variety of professions and a significant number are tertiary students. They share a common love of singing and in many cases are accomplished musicians. One of their strengths as an ensemble is their expertise and appreciation of a broad range of music styles and their ability to adapt their programme to suit any event. In 2008 Resonance competed at the World choir Games in Graz, Austria, where they won Gold and Silver medals in popular vocal and gospel categories. We sing a varied mix of music from traditional ballads and songs from the West End shows, to popular numbers. We welcome new adult members with or without prior choral experience. You do need some musical ability, but it's not essential to read music. Rehearsals are in Wembdon, near Bridgwater, on a Tuesday evening.
