The Choir is known for its adventurous programming, seeking out music written specifically for women and frequently commissioning new works. Its appearances include performances at the distinguished National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association (February 2003 and March 1997), including memorable New York performances at Carnegie Hall, Riverside Church, and Avery Fisher Hall. Elektra was honoured to represent Canada at the Fourth World Symposium on Choral Music in Sydney, Australia (August 1996). Along side intensive voice training, drama instruction, theory and ...  moreThe Grande Prairie Boys’ Choir is celebrating its seventeenth season, providing audiences at home and away with the gift of song from the hearts of 135 boys between the ages of 7 and 20. Along side intensive voice training, drama instruction, theory and sight reading in several smaller ensembles for several age categories, the Choir produces 6 sold out concerts per year. Their most recent ambitions include producing a Symphony and Singing in the City concert with professional orchestral musicians mentoring local professional and semiprofessional performers from Grande Prairie. The Senior and Men of Note Choirs have travelled Nationally to BC, and ON and internationally to Phoenix, Arizona. In 2014, they entered and won second place in the Canadian National Music Festival and in 2016 were chosen out of 45 Choirs to perform at the National Choral Conference in Edmonton where they premiered a choral piece Magnificat Anima Mea to huge acceptance. These singers have already demonstrated their enthusiasm for exploring various genres and styles, and their performances are infused with infectious joy and youthful enthusiasm. They act as ambassadors for the Community School of Music and Arts to reach the broader Community through performance and share their love of music.

The group’s repertory is quite wide and eclectic and ranges from sacred and secular early music to contemporary works. Besides singing some of the most important Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, by composers such as Victoria, Palestrina, Byrd, Monteverdi, Purcell, Handel and Bach, the group has also premiered several contemporary pieces and made first modern auditions of many Portuguese Renaissance and Baroque works. Christopher Bochmann, Ivan Moody, Bob Chilcott, Luis Tinoco, Eurico Carrapatoso and Vasco Mendonça are some of the composers who dedicated works to Grupo Vocal Olisipo. Grupo Vocal Olisipo attended several masterclasses led by some of the world leading vocal ensembles, such as The King's Singers and the Hilliard Ensemble and was coached in the performance of Baroque music by Jill Feldman. Fondly referred to as POWERHOUSE, the Choir was formed in 1986 for a church building fund program. In 1988 the Choir was officially founded and directed under the leadership of Shawn Cotterell. With thirty-five voices and a multi-talented band, the Choir’s repertoire ranges from hip-hop, reggae, traditional and contemporary gospel. The director and founder of this anointed Choir is Shawn Cotterell. Shawn Cotterell’s first musical experience began at the age of seven singing in a church Choir. By the age of twelve, Shawn answered the call of God on his life and began organizing the Powerhouse Fellowship Soul Choir.
