It has 170 singing members in soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections. Presenting classical choral music of a professional standard in Yorkshire and elsewhere in Britain, including at the BBC Proms and Manchester Arena, the Chorus is broadcast regularly on BBC Radio 3. The Leeds Festival Chorus was first formed in 1858 (the year Queen Victoria opened the Leeds Town Hall) to sing at the first Leeds Musical Festival, and was reformed for each succeeding one. The Chorus became independent in 1985. It celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2008 with a performance of a specially-commissioned work by Judith Bingham - a world premiere. In 2003, Matjaž Šček, the conductor of the group, was replaced by andreja Martinjak, who performed regularly with the choir and took part in national and international choir competitions where the choir as well as the conductor were winning numerous prizes and awards. The greatest achievements of the choir include a gold plaque, awarded in the 20th Slovenian national choir competition, Naša pesem (Our song) 2007 and the second place in the 9th international choir competition in Maribor 2008, where the choir also won a special prize for the best Slovenian choir of the competition. In 2008 we celebrated the 80th anniversary of the birth of Slovenian composer Pavle Merkú with a special cycle of concerts. Newly formed in 2022, the group is currently comprised of a mixed choir, a men's choir, and a women's choir. The mixed choir meets at the Manchester Rugby Club, and the men's and women's choirs meet at the Wilmslow Rugby Club. The repertoire consists of a little bit of everything - madrigals, movies, musicals, spirituals, shanties, serious songs, silly songs - everything. All singers are welcome, and there is no audition required. We sing as a team, one step at a time.  less
