It started life as The James Ashworth Singers giving its first concert in Thornton Parish Church in April 1976. After some years the base moved to the Unitarian Church near St Luke’s Hospital to be more central for members coming from all parts of Bradford and the surrounding area.
In 1979 James Ashworth moved on to projects new and was succeeded by Douglas Robinson who had recently retired as Chorus Master at Covent Garden and who held the post until ill health forced his retirement. During this period the name was changed first to The Ashworth Singers and later to The Bradford Chorale.
John Coates took over as Musical Director in 1984 and was followed by Tricia Platts in 1991. Since Tricia’s departure the Chorale has been led by several Musical Directors including Carleton Etherington, Andrew Dibb, Elizabeth Altman, John Griffiths and Christopher Rathbone. Located in the in the heart of Stockholm, these two Churches are a renowned center for Church music in ... moreS:t Jacobs Chamber Choir, with the conductor Gary Graden, performs regularly at concerts and services in S:t Jacobs Church and the Stockholm Cathedral. Located in the in the heart of Stockholm, these two Churches are a renowned center for Church music in Sweden. The choir´s repertoire consists of a cappella works from a wide range of national styles and periods, as well as larger works for choir and orchestra.
The choir has won several of Europe´s most important competitions including the European Grand Prize for choral music. The choir has also participated in a wide array of national and international festivals such as the Conference for Swedish Choral Conductors, the Scandinavian Symposium for Sacred Music, the Tolosa Festival in Spain, the IFCM World Symposium in Minneapolis, Sagra Musicale Umbra in Italy, Musica Sacra in Germany, Polyfollia in France, Debrecen Festival in Hungary, and De Internationale Koorbiënnale Haarlem in Holland.
