It was recorded on 5th December 2010 in the Harvey Nichols Espresso Bar in Leeds' magnificent Victoria Quarter in the first of St Peter's Singers' now-traditional Sunday evening carol performances there. The choir is directed by Dr Simon Lindley, its Music Director since the Singers' formation in June 1977. The first movement depicts the remarkable story of the captured Africans who were reduced to slaves by European settlers in the American continent, particularly in the Caribbean. The second movement recounts the indepence of Haiti; and the third movement is about the Perseverance of the country which to this day, Haiti is fighting with fury to keep its freedom. “No human being must live on their knees; slavery in all its forms is an affront to the Divine Creator. The sense of wonder teaches us to discover all the beauty and the magnificence of the creation, and the extraordinary richness of our humanity.
