The choir rehearses weekly during school term time, and performs three or four concerts per year. The choir normally performs unaccompanied, with programmes mixing sacred and secular music drawn from all historical periods and spanning many different styles. Recent programmes hAve included works by Britten, Whitacre, Lauridsen, Byrd, Tallis, Palestrina, Finzi, Rutter, and many others.  less

We do not belong to any particular geographical area or church denomination. In over 25 years, nearly 400 people from all backgrounds hAve sung with us - often for the first time in an English Cathedral. The number continues to grow year by year. Martin Hall, our founder, became 'Director Emeritus' in Autumn 2006 and Matthew O' Donovan took over the post of Director in his stead. Because of the way we meet, we don't require formal auditions in advance, but new singers are expected to be excellent sight readers and to hAve a good choral tone.  less

The choir has built an international reputation and has made it a trademark to include newly written music in its programmes. This is thanks to the work of Knut Nystedt (b. 1915), organist, composer and conductor, who returned to Norway in 1964 after studying in the USA and started a choir at the music department of the University of Oslo. The choir continues to recruit members from the department of music, as well as from the Norwegian Academy of Music in more recent years. The American choral tradition in which Nystedt was trained emphasises the importance of new music – a practice Nystedt brought back with him to Oslo. Knut Nystedt’s music became a vital element of Schola Cantorum’s repertoire. Tone Bianca Sparre Dahl became conductor in 2002, and has further established the choir’s firm position in Norway’s musical life. She has continued Nystedt’s tradition of performing modern music.
