When Santiago and I began to discuss this commission, we kept returning to the subject of mental health and inclusion. In a discussion with students, one student voiced that they “feel excluded and not cared for,” and that their struggle with mental health “has made [them] feel alone and helpless.” Santiago begins the piece with an old, quasi-ritualistic melody that calls back to previous times and traditions. As the work continues, the melody unites together with the other voices to emulate inclusion and unity of voices. His text draws parallels to nature and how we are able to bloom through the darkness of adversity with the help of others. On its first attempt at ...  moreFormally organized in August 2006, the Ars Cantica Ensemble is a choral group composed of young professionals from different University choirs who want to spread the Word of God through musical talent and commitment to service. On its first attempt at competitions in 2007, the group won Second Runner-Up in the prestigious PAGCOR Chorale Festival and was chosen as one of the top five winners in the Paskong Himig sa Lungsod ng PASIG Chorale Competition. In December 2007, the Ars Cantica Ensemble was featured at the Opening Ceremonies of the Amazing European Union Christmas held at The Podium, Ortigas and was one of the choirs invited to grace the Sing For Me Project of the Department of Social Welfare and Development. In February 2010, Ars Cantica Ensemble emerged as one of the winners in Sa ‘Yo Lamang Chorale Fest, a choral competition sponsored by ABS-CBN and Star Records.
