comes originally from my cantata “The Manchester Magnificat”,
based on Audrey Vaughan’s poems about the religious and social history of the city.
The oratorio was first performed in Manchester Cathedral in 1994.
This psalm forms the climax of the whole cantata and provides an expression of optimism after the
tragedies of the previous sections.
In this “extracted” version, the tragic surroundings of the history remain
in the background and the purebubbling joy of the psalm itself shines forth.
Enjoy the complex rhythms and let your hair down!
This performance by Daniel Shaw's Composer's Choir (based in Connecticut)
is a brilliant rendition of the piece and will, I hope,
encourage other church choirs and concert choirs to consider including it in their repertoire.

Background
The Simon Carrington Chamber Singers (SCCS), led by artistic director Simon Carrington, is a world class choral music ensemble based in Kansas City. The group was founded in 2008 by three of Carrington’s former students who shared the desire to form an elite professional vocal chamber ensemble under his direction.
SCCS, an ensemble of 24 singers, performs a diverse and challenging repertoire that spans the ages. America for Me
'Tis fine to see the Old World and travel up and down
Among the famous palaces and cities of renown,
To admire the crumbly castles and the statues and kings ¬¬
But now I think I've had enough of antiquated things.
So it's home again, and home again, America for me!
My heart is turning home again and there I long to be,
In the land of youth and freedom, beyond the ocean bars,
Where the air is full of sunlight and the flag is full of stars.
Oh, London is a man's town, there's power in the air;
And Paris is a woman's town, with flowers in her hair;
And it's sweet to dream in Venice, and it's great to study Rome;
But when it comes to living there is no place like home.
I like the German fir-woods in green battalions drilled;
I like the gardens of Versailles with flashing fountains filled;
But, oh, to take your had, my dear, and ramble for a day
In the friendly western woodland where Nat... less

This is the five part madrigal version of Ariadne's Lament, which she sings when she is abandoned on the island of Naxos by her lover Theseus.
The translation is by Francesco Campelli on CPDL
The performance was created in memory of the late Richard Gofton, who introduced me to the music back in 1976 (Our Strasbourg choir Psalterion performed it at that time)
