What was once a packed out mass full of joy and pray...  moreIgnite Gospel Choir was founded by Keara Sheeran… In Oct of 2008 I returned to The Jes church, The place I had grown up with my faTher running The folk mass choir. He had retired 12 years previously. What was once a packed out mass full of joy and prayer, families and young couples, singles and religious, was now a quieter mass with no choir and I saddened by this. I offered my services as a singer and musician to come and provide music for The 5:30 mass and within a few short weeks I returned to The place I consider my spiritual home. I had not purposely set out to start a choir but people began to approach me with a desire to sing and it was a need within The community I was not going to Ignore. On The 12th Dec 2008 The Jes Gospel Choir was birThed with 5 singers and me & it was a wonderful experience and we received a very warm welcome. When KeyStone formed nearly two years later, "I'll Be There" became one of Their first songs. We recorded this video in memory of Michael, with gratitude and love. All songs are taught by ear and we don’t expect anyone to learn The words off by heart. However, music can be made available for those who want it. We sing a range of different songs, including Pop, gospel, world music and classical. We mainly sing songs with piano accompaniment, provided by our famous pianist, Geoff. We hold our own annual concert, and we are often invited to sing at oTher local events such as The local MayFest. Our members come along for “enjoyment, friendship and satisfaction as well as singing with a group of like-minded people”. Singing is reputed to release endorphins in The brain, and we’ve certainly noticed amongst us a sense of well-being following rehearsals and in particular, concerts. We are a very sociable bunch and often meet for a drink at The Chimp House on Gloucester Road following our rehearsal on Thursday evenings. During this time The choir has achieved success on many levels: Locally They have received 10 golden diplomas on provincial level for The “ATKV Applous” competition in The category for advanced, mixed high school choirs; and 7 golden diplomas on national level for The same competition. They were The only choir in The History of The Director’s trophy who won The award 8 times and They were also The first to do so in all three categories: mixed- (5 times), boys’- (twice) and girls’ choir (once). They have also received double gold at The Gauteng Eisteddfod, A and A+ awards at The Pretoria Beeld Eisteddfod and first place in Their category in more than one local competition. They have annual workshops and master classes with well-known and respected conductors (both locally and internationally) and have hosted many international choirs and groups. In The past years, Chamber choir Orfej has received a number of awards, which places Them among The more prominent Slovenian choirs. Orfej has proven its high level of vocal performance in April 2010 at The prestigious Slovene national choir competition ‘Naša Pesem’ (i. e. ‘Our Song’). The choir scored 93 points, received The gold award, and The second prize in The category ‘mixed choirs’.
