Founded in 1989 by Mr. Albert Morland to provide an opportunity for ex-members of the Wonderboom High School Choir to continue singing together after matriculating, it has since evolved to include members from a broader community that come from various backgrounds and professions (including law, accounting, nursing, teaching and IT) and are between 18 and 65 years of age. The choir has toured and performed across South Africa during the past 30 years and has an established reputation as a warm, friendly and “no-fuss” group with good choral sound who are just as comfortable performing at nursing homes and other charitable events as they are performing alongside the best choirs in the world on International stages, for instance, at the 10th World Choir Games in 2018, where they took home a silver medal (79.5%) in the champion’s category for mixed adult choirs. It was recorded on 5th December 2010 in the Harvey Nichols Espresso Bar in Leeds' magnificent Victoria Quarter in the first of St Peter's Singers' now-traditional Sunday evening carol performances there. The choir is directed by Dr Simon Lindley, its Music Director since the Singers' formation in June 1977. It also aims to provide an opportunity for passionate Singers to discover the voice as a singing instrument, develop high-level musical skills related to choral singing, influence choral music appreciation, develop cultural awareness, use choral music as a tool for change in building a better community, and finally, to represent Eastern Visayas in both local and international choral scenes. I was on the 1 train on Manhattan’s West Side one day when I saw the poem “Heaven,” by Patrick Phillips. I was immediately captured by the simple beauty of Patrick’s poem, and the mystery of the first line, “It will be the past.” I loved his vision and thought immediately that I wanted to compose music for this poem. Mystery, joy, wonder. “Heaven” is the winner of choral composition competitions sponsored by both the Manhattan Choral Ensemble and Georgia College.
