This objective is achieved by exposing students to music of different nationalities and/or cultures and their commitment to recreate a unique tone quality that identifies with the cultural environment of each composition.

Myroslaw Antonowycz conducted the worship services in C...  moreThe basis for the Utrecht Byzantine Choir lies in a group of Ukrainian seminarians with its professors who came to the Netherlands shortly after the Second World War. Born and raised in Ukrainia dr. Myroslaw Antonowycz conducted the worship services in Culemborg for the reestablished Ukrainian seminar. After the seminarians were graduated, they swarmed out to fulfill their priestly vocation for the Ukrainians all over the world. The now outside the monastery walls well-known seminarian choir fell apart while applications for the singing of liturgies and concerts throughout the Netherlands, kept coming. On the initiative of Msgr. AG Smith, dr. Antonowycz founded the Utrecht Byzantine Choir on February 9, 1951, consisting of only Dutch men, who specialized in singing the liturgy according to the Slavic-Byzantine rite. In cooperation with the Apostolate of the Eastern Churches, the UBK initially only sang liturgies according to the Byzantine Rite. Psalms 39:24 The year started with bright hope for a promising great year, yet the treat of a deadly virus lingered in our ears. In February, COVID caused some concern in America as people were being warned of the implications the virus could bring when it came from overseas. By March, our government told us we needed to stay home as the virus was deadly to all age groups and almost impossible to avoid. Most necessities, like toilet paper and cleaning products, were gone from the shelves of all stores making people worry how fighting this treat would be possible. Throughout the country, several people offered to help neighbors, friends, and family as they self-quarantined and socially distanced from each, as we were told it was our best defense against the upcoming pandemic. Maite Rodríguez y está integrado por más de cuarenta cantantes, algunos de ellos músicos profesionales, otros docentes, estudiantes de música o cantantes aficionados, en algunos casos con largas trayectorias en el ambiente coral de nuestro país. Todos, con distintos perfiles y edades, unidos por la pasión hacia la música y el canto coral. Desde el comienzo, el ensamble tiene por objetivo investigar la música coral a capella de los siglos XX y XXI -sacra, profana y popular- de compositores tanto de Latinoamérica como de Europa. El interés estuvo puesto en traer a nuestro medio músicas con planteos compositivos novedosos y arreglos que acercan a los distintos folklores, aportando timbres, ritmos y la fuerza de la tradición propia de cada pueblo.
