Philomela is a wonderful experience that will linger in your mind even after the music has died down. Philomela has become one of the most highly regarded choirs in Finland. Marjukka Riihimäki has acted as the choir´s conductor since it was established in 1984. Philomela is one of the most original choirs in Finland. It is a group of 40 unprejudiced, music-loving women who together form a graceful, polyphonic musical instrument. The choir performances are intensive and surprising experiences which combine theatrical elements to music. Philomela’s rehearsals are held in Helsinki but the choir gives several Concerts per year all over Finland as well as abroad. Musical profile of Philomela is composed of contemporary Scandinavian choir music with flavours of world music, especially Finnish folk music.  less

Han...  moreOur next Concert will be : Handel : Israel in Egypt On 16 November 2025 at 7.30 All Saints Church Kingston will become the stage for intensely powerful musical drama as Kingston Choral Society opens their 75th season with a truly remarkable work. Handel’s Israel in Egypt is one of Handel’s most lavish and dramatic oratorios. Unusually, the soloists’ contributions are secondary as the choir is given the starring role in the turbulent narrative, relating the story of the Biblical plagues, the Israelites’ flight from Egypt via the parting of the Red Sea, and their triumph over the Pharaoh’s army. The plot unfolds in a series of thrilling and startlingly inventive choruses. It is fitting that KCS should introduce their 75th Anniversary season with a Handel oratorio. Swan. Foreward: Santiago Veros wrote Almas de Barro at the age of 19, dedicating it to a young woman who at the time was shy and with whom he rarely talked. This piece intimately describes the moments during music theory classes when the two would look at each other continuously, youthfully, and silently, as if unable to do anything else. The piece, written as a counterpoint assignment, was intended to be performed during music theory class as a declaration of love. The idea was to make a musical representation of those moments. The piece begins without words, the voices representing youthful looks. They come together and occasionally dodge each other to highlight the discomfort ...    less
