What should I do? I don't have any money. I would marry you if I did." This outdoor performance was the culmination of a six-week project which creates a choir from scratch for one night only. Each winter and Summer, Chris Rowbury gathers a random bunch of singers from in and around Ipswich. There are no auditions and all songs are taught and learnt by ear. The vocal section of the Goldberg Ensemble, consisting of about 22 singers coming from various established choirs in Malta, brings together choral enthusiasts to perform primarily baroque choral music in a more exhaustive manner. The musicians too are distinguished performers in their own right who tour Europe extensively, and who are versatile on both modern and baroque instruments. The ensemble's director, Michael Laus, is the inspiration and motivator of the Goldberg Ensemble, whose harpsichord playing and conducting have been highly acclaimed by the international press.  less

Each winter and Summer, Chris Rowbury gathers a random bunch of singers from in and around Ipswich. There are no auditions and all songs are taught and learnt by ear. The present Society was founded in 1961, so we are now in our 51st year and still going from strength to strength. We perform three or four main concerts during the year, with programmes featuring anything from Bach (Christmas Oratorio, St. John Passion) to Beatles, Gounod (Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cecile) to Gershwin, Rutter (Requiem, Magnificat, carols) and Haydn (Creation, Te Deum) to Rogers and Hart.  less
