Winning performance at the German National choir Competition 2010 in Dortmund

As a composer, I tend to lean toward and connect to slow and emotional pieces. I have always been someone who strives to convey emotional complexity, therefore writing an up-tempo piece had to be purposeful and meaningful. The inspiration for this score comes from the first time I was able to hear my son's heartbeat during an ultrasound. It was a magical and exciting moment that I will never forget; however, leading up to that specific moment there was an element of tension. Six months prior to hearing my son's heartbeat, my wife and I found ourselves in a very different situation with the outcome of an ultrasound. We arrived at the hospital excited to meet our child, only to discover we had silently miscarried. I had never felt so deflated and aimless in one sudden moment. MY RED BOOTS is based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018). Both she and my late father, Josef Hoffman, were Jewish Holocaust Survivors. My mother’s brief memoirs are housed at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. I have been trying to hear music for MY RED BOOTS for decades. It is fitting that my muse cooperated with me when I was seeking a text to set to music for the Rocky Mountain Chamber choir’s 2024 call for scores, because global anti-Semitism has not been this rampant since the 1930s. During the events of October 7, 2023 in Israel, "Babies were taken from their mother's arms" just as in my mother's poem.
