In over 25 years, nearly 400 people from all backgro...  moreChoir members are based all over the United Kingdom, and we come together only when we rehearse and sing at a Cathedral city. We do not belong to any particular geographical area or church denomination. In over 25 years, nearly 400 people from all backgrounds have sung with us - often for the first time in an English Cathedral. The number continues to grow year by year. Martin Hall, our founder, became 'Director Emeritus' in Autumn 2006 and Matthew O' Donovan took over the post of Director in his stead. Because of the way we meet, we don't require formal auditions in advance, but new singers are expected to be excellent sight readers and to have a good choral tone.  less

Lifted by one hundred voices accompanied by professional soloists and orchestras, Paris Choral Society programs draw on celebrated requiems, masses and other pieces by Mozart, Handel, Boulanger, Verdi, Haydn, Hildegard von Bingen, Bach, Fauré and Mendelssohn, to name a few. We also perform the finest in modern choral works by Benjamin Britten, Nathaniel Dett, Maurice Duruflé, Elaine Hagenberg, Kim Porter, Carl Rütti and others with occasional forays into American hymns and spirituals and operatic favorites. The chorale is unique in Paris, too, for its membership, which the New York Times once described as “unpaid but professional-level.” Its singers are French- and English-speaking, of all ages and backgrounds, and competition at auditions can be lively. All are committed to a spirit of musical excellence.  less

Downtown Voices has performed works by Reena Esmail, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Arvo Pärt, Anton Webern, Alberto Ginastera, Leoš Janáček, James MacMillan, and Philip Glass. The choir was recently featured in two world premieres: Luna Pearl Woolf’s Number Our Days at the Perelman Performing Arts Center and Benedict Sheehan’s oratorio Akathist, which was recorded alongside Trinity Choir, Artefact Ensemble, Trinity Youth Chorus, and NOVUS. Downtown Voices made its Carnegie Hall debut in 2022 with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by JoAnn Falletta for the Lukas Foss Centennial Celebration.    Other recent performances include the New York premiere of Reena Esmail’s Malhaar: A Requiem for Water, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at the Ross Farm, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew.
