Romulo as President of the University of the Philippines. Through its 50 years of existence, the group has metamorphosed from being a simple university chorale into a musical force of national and world stature. Aside from its undeniable musical prowess and versatility in performing classical, Filipino folk, pop, and Broadway genres—all with ease, the Concert Chorus is also recognized as the pioneer of choreographed song for a choir. This innovation was started by the late Dean Reynaldo T. Paguio in 1969, and flourished under top choreographers like Edru Abraham, Gener Caringal, Tony Fabella, Edna Vida, Sonia Domingo, Steve Villaruz, Rene Hofileña, Ianne Damian, Paul Morales, Allan Samonte, and Ernest Hojilla, to name a few. We are open to all singers with no auditions and previous experience of contemporary music is not needed. We work mainly, though not exclusively, from music, some of which is unconventionally notated. Most of our work is a capella and the focus is on ensemble singing. One objective is to expand the contemporary amateur Vocal repertoire, which is less developed than the instrumental repertoire. We are dedicated to quality performances, music education, and community service. As the resident choral ensemble of the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, we perform a varied repertoire from classics to Broadway and rock to Jazz in two main concerts, one during the Christmas season and one in the spring, with additional benefit and collaborative performances throughout the year. Scheduled auditions for new members are held in August and January of each year. Our mission is to enhance the cultural and musical life of the community and to provide an opportunity for those interested in choral music to participate in these musical endeavors.
