Dedicated to developing new audiences for music rooted in Balkan, Slavic, and Caucasian women's vocal traditions, Kitka also strives to expand the boundaries of folk song as a living and evolving expressive art form. As the finale to the Vocal Art Ensemble's "INKSPELL--Choral Music Inspired by Masters of Poetry" concerts, we performed Jaako Maantijaarvi's first three Shakespeare Songs, culminating on our playful, crafty interpretation to this famous text from MacBeth....  onclick="$(this).getParent().getNext().style.display='';$(this).getParent().style.display='none';">moreone;">As the finale to the Vocal Art Ensemble's "INKSPELL--Choral Music Inspired by Masters of Poetry" concerts, we performed Jaako Maantijaarvi's first three Shakespeare Songs, culminating on our playful, crafty interpretation to this famous text from MacBeth. The women shed their shawls and toss them into the center to represent the ingredients being dropped into the bubbling 'cauldron'.
