Ubi Caritas
Paul Mealor (b. 1975)
Modern Classical
Welsh composer Paul Mealor originally wrote this piece as the first movement of his Rose Cycle with title and text 'Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal'. His refashioned version with the famous Latin text Ubi caritas et amor was commissioned by Prince William and premiered by the Choirs of Westminster Abbey and Her Majesty's Chapel Royal, conducted by James O'Donnell, at the Royal Wedding of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales with Miss Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey in April 2011.
The roses bloom in the month of May,
But my soul's full of gloom suffering in love.
The nightingales sing and are sighing in love,
The passion will kill me, multiply my pain.
Come faster, oh dove, come faster to me,
Come faster, my soul, because I shall die.
