"A Country Boy in Winter" by American poet Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) appeared in Harper's Young People for January 24, 1882. The setting for men's chorus was completed in August 2001 and is dedicated to William Rust Bartholomew. The premiere performance took place at the 2004 Society of Composers National Conference.

Musically educated in the classical tradition, he began teaching at 12 and writing at age 16. He reached the rank of Master of the Royal Chapel (most important post for a musician in Brazil Cologne) appointed by King John IV and conducted the first performances of Mozart’s "Requiem" and Haydn’s "Creation" in Brazil. Poor, mulatto, losing his father early and being educated with great difficulty, it is not known exactly how managed to get the culture that claim to have belonged to him.
