This is thanks to the work of Knut Nystedt (b....  moreThroughout its existence the chamber choir Schola Cantorum has had high ambitions. The choir has built an International reputation and has made it a trademark to include newly written music in its programmes. This is thanks to the work of Knut Nystedt (b. 1915), organist, composer and conductor, who returned to Norway in 1964 after studying in the USA and started a choir at the music department of the University of Oslo. The choir continues to recruit members from the department of music, as well as from the Norwegian Academy of Music in more recent years. The American choral tradition in which Nystedt was trained emphasises the importance of new music – a practice Nystedt brought back with him to Oslo. Knut Nystedt’s music became a vital element of Schola Cantorum’s repertoire. Tone Bianca Sparre Dahl became conductor in 2002, and has further established the choir’s firm position in Norway’s musical life. She has continued Nystedt’s tradition of performing modern music. While the majority of the singers are undergraduate music majors, membership is open to all students at the university through an audition process. The group has achieved an impressive reputation of excellence, having been chosen each of the last twenty years to perform at conventions or festivals around the country: the Pennsylvania Music Educators State Conference; the Eastern Division Music Educators National Conference; the Music Educators National Convention; the American Choral Directors Association Pennsylvania State Conference, and the ACDA Eastern Division Convention. The choir is renowned on the International stage as well, representing the US at competitions and festivals around the world. The Academic Choir of Gdańsk University of Technology performed at the Second Gala Concert of the 16th edition of the festival. The Concert was held in the Adam Mickiewicz University Aula, known for its excellent acoustics. The choir performed among distinguished performers such as the Academic Choir of Warsaw University, the Academic Choir of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the Choir of Mahidol University from Thailand, and the percussion duo of Piotr and Bartłomiej Sutt.  less
